Friday, 21 December 2007 - First Sea Day

After breakfast we went to the Captains talk, which was very interesting.

Since Bob was in the cabin all day yesterday, they didn't get a chance to make it up, so when we went back to the cabin after the captain's talk, we found a towel rabbit on the bed.

They don't seem to be able to give us extra towels so we can't keep the towel animals very long as we have to use the towels that they use in them.

For lunch I had the
Air Cured Swiss Beef

with celery and pear salad and sun dried cranberries as an appetizer, and we both had Watercress soup

which was good. Then we both had Fish and chips and mushy peas

The mushy peas were pureed so that no peas were visible, and the chips were just regular fries. Then we had pineapple upside down cake for dessert.

Bob was unhappy with it because it looked as though they did it in muffin pans rather than as a sheet cake. He's picky about his pineapple upsidedown cake.

For dinner, I had two soups - butternut squash and chilled strawberry. Bob had the Tropical fruits

and the strawberry soup. Then I had the vegetarian

We put our clocks back tonight so as to be on Miami time.

Saturday, Dec 22, 2007. Second Sea Day.

Bob went up to the Garden Cafe for breakfast, but I went up to swim in the morning before breakfast. First I weighed myself. When I weighed myself on the Grandeur I had only gained a pound. This time I'd gained 6 more.

There were no loungers that didn't have towels etc on them, and there weren't that many people actually there. So much for the half hour rule. The pool was much colder than before, but the hot tubs were too hot. There is a waterfall that falls into the adult pool, but the water pressure of the fall is so great that you can't actually swim through it.

After I swam, I got breakfast at the outdoor food bar which is right outside the Garden Cafe (buffet). They had a kind of continental breakfast, cold cereal, Danish and rolls but no butter, so the steward went inside to get a pat for me. They had fruit also. It was so windy that it blew my partly used butter pat off the table. I had to weigh everything down.

I went down and got a refund for Bob's tour that he didn't take. And I also went up the internet cafe and asked if I could use my laptop on the morning of disembarkation/embarkation. They said I could use the wireless, but this turned out to be wrong, as I got a signal but could not log in. I asked the main desk why there were two different times for people staying on the ship to meet - our letter said 2:30 but the plan of the day said 2:00. They said either was OK, so after lunch we went up to hear the lecture.

The man giving the previous lecture on whether your pet needs a psychiatrist was still there when we got there.

This was a two week cruise and each week could be booked separately. We booked both weeks. Next week is the Christmas week part and this was the lecture on the procedure to be followed for those people who are doing a two week cruise.

If we wanted to stay on the ship and not go somewhere in Miami (which we do - we are often in Miami to see our daughter and grandchildren), we were to be in the Lotus Garden (restaurant) by 9:45 and would be escorted through immigration and back onto the ship.

So many people say that they can't get reservations at any of the other restaurants and they resent that - some have said that the lady that makes the reservations is very rude. And a lot of them just don't like the freestyle concept. I wonder why they took this cruise in that case.

For lunch we went to the Indigo as we seem to have better luck sharing there. Bob and I asked for the Grape Cocktail and he got the Grape Cocktail and I got the
Chickpea and tomato dip

Then we both asked for Cream of Apricot and Peach Soup, and he got his, and I didn't get any. He was still eating his grapes, so he gave me his soup. Then he had a meatball sub and I had chicken salad, but it was hardly recognizable as chicken salad (although it was good).
Would you know this was chicken salad?

It was billed as Spicy Chicken Salad with carrot, cucumber, roasted peanuts, cilantro and spring onion. Then we both had the

At dinner, we were put at the same table again.

I had the

and actually got it this time, and the tomato salad with mozzarella. Bob got Cured Salmon Tartar and Duck Soup

I got the

and Bob got the Pecan crusted snapper. I had the

with Mango Lime Coulis for dessert and he just had ice cream with chocolate sauce.

I went up to see the Dallas game on the big TV, and stayed there until I couldn't stay awake anymore. When I went down to the cabin, the corridor was full of suitcases.

Sunday 23 December 2007 - Changeover in Miami

We went up to the Indigo to have breakfast and didn't get served until almost 8:30 - one of the couples at the table had to leave before they got their breakfast because they were on the airboat tour. (We did that tour last year)
Breakfast in dining room

After breakfast we went to sit in the Lotus Garden, and I tried to use the last 25 minutes of the internet, but it won't let me log on. So I used the time to write this. The music got on my nerves after awhile

Then they came in to say that security was late clearing the checks so they wouldn't be able to get us off and back on again until later. There was a LARGE stentorian man from England who was highly indignant and who was yelling at the poor little oriental woman from the cruise ship staff that he should have gotten off FIRST before the rest of the people because their vacation was being RUINED. Ignoring the fact that we were told at the meeting that if we didn't want to get right back on the ship that we could get off any time we wanted to. Also of course nothing opens before 10 on Sunday anyway.

Finally at about 10:30 at the very end (while the ship people were preparing to fog the area with something), they gave us tags to paste on ourselves that said "In Transit Guest Going back to the Norwegian Pearl", and we walked off. They cleared a line for us and they looked at our passports, and then they held us in a little group until 11:45 and then we went back on the ship. We could go directly to our cabins and then we ate lunch. This was different from last time where they had people stationed at the elevators and stairs to make SURE that we didn't escape to our cabins before they were ready to let us go there. And our cabin was ready for us.

We went to the Indigo for lunch and were seated by the window - we were almost the first there.

While we ate, we talked to the server, who didn't really have much to do yet. She was watching the people getting onto the Jewel which was next to us - she said she had friends on there - she worked there before she was transferred to the Pearl. This was her third year with NCL and she was going home soon.

After my

I had banana soup, and a salad

Bob had split pea soup, banana soup, peach and blueberry cobbler, which I had on the last embarkation day. They are repeating menus

I went up to the internet cafe to talk to them about a sign-up bonus, and also made the reservation for the Sting Ray City tour through the excursion desk. We hadn't gotten the excursion tickets yet, so I couldn't turn the unwanted ones back in.

We then went back to our room. I made reservations for the Italian restaurant for tonight, and the Tex Mex restaurant for the 24th. When it came time for the ship to leave, I went up to the Promenade Deck, and took photos.

The full moon was setting over the ocean, but the windows were dirty so it was hard to take a picture. The waiter took my camera outside, and he managed to get a picture where the moon looked like a heart. He also took a picture of us.

We are heading for Cozumel

Monday 24 December 2007 - Sea Day

The people who had re-embarked with us had said that they usually had breakfast in the Blue Lagoon which is a 24 hour restaurant, but you don't need reservations.

Bob didn't think they did breakfast, but we went up there anyway. And they DID have breakfast, but only eggs, bacon, rolls/muffins, and French toast. No cereal.

But the menu said that they had cranberry juice, so we asked for that.

Consternation!!!

Wouldn't we rather have orange or apple? Cranberry juice would take a long time. No. We really wanted cranberry and would wait. Turned out they had to go down to deck 6 to get it because they didn't really have any. The only place that has cranberry juice is the Indigo.

We were passing Cuba - were a little past Havana by this time

but could see the shore pretty well. I took some pictures. I thought I saw a lighthouse, but couldn't focus on it. There didn't appear to be many people up and about yet. Bob went to make a reservation for Christmas dinner - he tried to call, but no one ever answered. I changed the cameras back to EST.

We also got our stuff ready for tomorrow - we are going on a 4x4 trip which is supposed to go to the lighthouse, the Mayan ruins, and then snorkeling. And it starts pretty early - we dock in Cozumel at 0700

I gave Bob his Christmas presents - he was upset because he didn't think we were exchanging presents. Why he thought that, I don't know.

I had taken a photo of the menu that the Blue Lagoon had for lunch and dinner and read it to Bob and he thought it sounded good, so we went there for lunch too. We both got

The menu then said "Cakes" for dessert, but apparently no one ever asked them for the cakes. Eventually we got two slices of pound cake and three slices of banana cake.

When we got back to the room there was a note of apology for the unpleasantness at re-embarkation, and a bottle of wine and two glasses. So Bob wrote a note saying that it was totally not NCL's fault - that their presentation was quite clear, and he knew that the problem was with the Miami Customs/Immigration. He apologized for the behavior of the other guests. We both signed it. Then he got a plastic bag from the steward, and returned the wine with the note.

We all got a free bingo card (which we didn't get on the last segment), so I went up when bingo was to start which was 1615.

But by 1700, they hadn't started it yet and there was supposed to be interactive trivia so I left before it started. Unfortunately, the interactive trivia was canceled because they never got the equipment to work.

I spoke to the cruise director Ray Ray as I was walking to the elevators - he WAS on the Crown previously as I had remembered.

We had reservations for the Tex-Mex for tonight.

We had to turn our clocks back because of course Cozumel is in the Central Time zone.

Crystal Atrium with Chihuly on the big screeen

I went to see the football game in the Crystal Atrium (2nd largest screen on any cruise ship). The problem is that it is very crowded, and they have the sound turned way down so I can't hear it. If I get close enough to maybe hear it, it gives me a headache to be that close to it. And when I finally gave in and went back to the cabin, I found I could have been watching it there all that time. By that time, Bob had already read the daily plan, and said that we might be tendering in to Cozumel. I didn't think so - there were only supposed to be two other ships there.
